Mayday Stories: Day 22 Knock at the Door

We enjoyed the prompt for Storyaday Day 22 which focused on a mysterious knock on the door, a tarot card, and three kids. This sparked an idea that we hope to revisit again soon.

Knock at the Door

Grainne carefully moved the souffle into the oven. She held onto it for dear life and feared every second she was bending over that it would be ruined before it had a chance to even bake. Souffles made her nervous but she was determined to win. She shuts the door and lets out a breath. "it's in the oven."

"Success!" Raiden whispers as loudly as he dares. He's ruined the last three souffles by being too excited in their presence and would really rather not repeat that now. Especially with how intense Grainne was.

Voya pumps a fist in the air triumphantly. It hadn't fallen on the way to the stove! "That was a huge success!"

Grainne waves her hands in the air. Her excitement falls quickly when a loud bang occurs at the door. "Noooo." She hisses and runs as quietly as possible to answer it.

Voya is hot on her heels. "I /knew/ we should have put up a sign!"

Raiden hovers around the stove, silently begging the souffle to work with them here.

Grainne yanks the door open... to find no one there. "Hello?" She leans out to look around. "No one is here..." She glances down to see three brass keys and a tarot card. "Weird... Guys look at this."

"Is that a cat?" Voya asks, scooping up the tarot card. "Aww how cute!" She gushes. "It's wearing a little hat!" The card appears to be hand-painted and depicts a fluffy black cat wearing a witch's hat with a paw resting on a potion bottle. The text at the bottom says THE HIGH PRIESTESS.

"What does that mean?" Grainne shuts the door behind them as they go back inside. "And what's with the keys?"

"Weird gifts in the middle of the night," Raiden whispers, peering over his friends' shoulders.

"What are we supposed to do with this?" Grainne hands the items off and locks the door.

"Maybe you're supposed to hand these off to someone?" Voya suggests.

"Or this is a case of mistaken identity," Raiden points out. "This isn't the only cabin in the woods, after all."

"That's true. I'm sure it's just a silly thing." Grainne returns to the stove to check on the souffle. "I'm sure it's nothing." What a way to jinx herself.
